HOTTEST THING IN TECH
Your AI Phone Will Be Inside You
At Mobile World Conference 2025, futurist Ray Kurzweil made waves with his bold prediction: AGI by 2029, full AI-human integration by the 2030s, and even a potential "longevity escape velocity" by 2032. His book When We Merge With AI underscores his vision that AI will not just complement human intelligence but become an intrinsic part of it. The conversation at MWC reflected this accelerating AI revolution, with much discussion around AGI and the impacts of Agentic AI on the mobile tech world, MWC 2025 was also significant due to economic and geopolitical pressures, a resurgence in telecom spending as the industry recovers, and investment in telco AI infrastructure. As the industry’s key players make decisive moves to stay ahead, some pretty amazing concepts and tech was on display; from DT and Perplexity’s AI Phone reveal to Bret Taylor’s agentic AI comments and Stretchable Screens. We have all the updates here.
Apple and Google’s Divergent Paths
The two dominant mobile ecosystems— AAPL ( ▲ 1.59% ) iOS and Google’s Android—are on vastly different AI trajectories. Google is moving fast to integrate AI across its ecosystem, while Apple continues its cautious, privacy-first approach:
Apple’s Slow, Steady AI Strategy
iPad Air with M3 Chip: Apple’s latest iPad Air brings AI-powered features to a broader audience, integrating tools like ChatGPT into its ecosystem.
Siri Delays Until 2027: Apple is holding back on a full AI upgrade for Siri, betting customers will stay loyal despite competitors making faster moves.
New iPad Launch: Apple’s upgraded base-level iPad has an A16 chip and 128GB storage, but no Apple Intelligence as AI integration remains selective.
Google’s AI-First Strategy Evolves
Gemini AI Upgrades: Google now allows users to interact with AI using video or live screen content, making digital assistants far more capable.
Pixel AI brings Scam detection in Messages and the Pixel Sense app, which processes user data to deliver hyper-personalized experiences.
Search Becomes an Agent: Pichai’s Project Astra vision of transforming from a search platform into an AI assistant is well underway.
Perplexity’s AI phone
Speaking of AI search and assistants, a major bombshell at the conference was Deutsche Telekom announcing an upcoming AI Phone powered by Perplexity Assistant. The device, set to launch later this year, will operate primarily through voice commands, allowing users to book flights and make reservations without switching apps. AI features from Google Cloud, ElevenLabs, and Picsart will also be integrated into the MeinMagenta app for other smartphones. DT also announced it is partnering with ElevenLabs to enable users to turn articles into high-quality podcasts in seconds, much like Google’s NotebookLM tool, demonstrating AI's potential to transform content consumption in the mobile space
Agentic AI: OpenAI’s Vision for AI Agents
OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor also doubled down on AI agents at MWC, predicting they will handle a growing share of digital tasks. This aligns with broader trends in agentic AI—where AI not only responds to queries but takes proactive action.
Other Agentic AI Updates and Innovation
Amazon unveiled Alexa+ with advanced generative AI assistant capabilities for complex tasks, aiming to create an interconnected mobile ecosystem of AI-powered devices.
Stability AI on ARM Chips: This partnership to optimize stability’s AI voice models for mobile chips will allow voice-powered AI assistants to run efficiently on phones without relying on the cloud.
Jolla’s Privacy-Focused AI Assistant: Addressing growing privacy concerns, it challenges mainstream AI assistants that heavily rely on data collection.
Honor’s $10B Investment: Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor announced a $10 billion AI investment and closer collaboration with Google.
Manus is a Chinese general AI agent that excels in various tasks, from personalized travel planning to in-depth stock analysis, achieving state-of-the-art performance on the GAIA benchmark, outperforming OpenAI’s operator to become the first truly autonomous general agent.
Salesforce's Agentforce 2dx introduced autonomous AI agents that operate without human prompts, enhancing enterprise workflows. The platform aims to reduce administrative burdens, particularly in healthcare.
The Telecom Industry’s AI Reset
MWC 2025 was heavily focused on future proofing with AI infrastructure. With AI demands soaring, telecom leaders called for a major industry reset. With the AI-driven 6G future looming, the telecom industry must evolve or risk being left behind:
Vodafone’s New AI Division: Vodafone launched “Vone Intelligent Services,” a new business unit focused on AI-powered network operations.
Mistral’s Call to Telcos: French AI firm Mistral urged telecom companies to become hyperscalers, leveraging AI to scale operations like cloud giants.
Tech Mahindra’s AI-Powered Networks: Using Nvidia, Meta’s Llama, and AWS cloud, Tech Mahindra is developing AI-driven network operations for telecoms.
Nokia and Indonesia’s IOH Partnership: This initiative will accelerate AI-driven computing for RAN workloads.
Other Tech Innovation and Releases
Samsung’s Screen Innovation: The latest concepts included tri-fold tablets, folding gaming handhelds, rollable screens and even a stretchable screen.
Lenovo’s Solar-Powered Laptop: This tech is a no-brainer for mobile phones as their main purpose is to be used outside of the house. PV charging instead of overheating phones? Look for this tech to explode in mobile soon.
Nothing Phone (3a) Pro: A $459 smartphone with flagship-like features and an emphasis on AI tools, as high-end design becomes more accessible.
